FAT is an unusual name for a unique company. Established in 1971, the company was originally named Fleming and Aronson High Performance after the owners Ron Fleming and Greg Aronson. The partners were members of Der Kleiner Panzers Volkswagen Club and originally the business began as a street/drag engine and transmission shop. They have been credited with the first and now famous “Cal Look” VW. At the drag strip Greg built and drove the “Tar Babe” to an I/G class win at the 1973 NHRA Winternationals. Ron was also an I/G record holder building and driving the “Underdog”. In fact, Ron is still well-known at the drag strip as the builder and driver of yet another winning VW.

By the late 1970s FAT PERFORMANCE began developing the air-cooled VW engine for off-road applications and in 1982 they developed the first water-cooled VW Rabbit for that use. Their 80+ collective years of hands-on experience and acquired knowledge, coupled with competitive drivers and quality equipment, have produced impressive win records in both the desert and short course racing events. They have been ten time S.C.O.R.E. engine builders of the year. You can find Ron and Greg at most of the S.C.O.R.E., Best In The Desert, S.N.O.R.E. and Lucas races offering their customers support.

Over the years FAT has built a wide variety of engines for many applications; road racing, off-road racing, recreational off-roading, and street cars, including: VW buses, Porsches and a variety of kit cars. In addition to their engine building services they offer an extensive selection of performance parts. Call or come by FAT for help in making the correct decisions on complete engines or in selecting components that will outperform all others.
